Doggy Cake Smash

After Olive did her first birthday cake smash, I suggested to her mom Louise, that she do a doggy cake smash for her first baby’s next birthday – her Basset Hound, Dryfuss! (You might remember him as he walked Louise down the aisle when she married the love of her life, Jeff!)

Well, the time finally came. Louise took the photos, and I edited them (yes, I provide photo editing services as well!) and combined them into the storyboard below. Louise’s first attempt was actually a “steak smash”, but Dryfuss gobbled up that steak in 3 bites! The next day Louise made quite a fancy “cake” (piled wet dog food), and it took Dryfuss a bit longer to eat it all. After this doggy cake smash, Dryfuss slept for the rest of the day – I guess he wasn’t used to having so much food!

Happy Birthday Dryfuss!!!!

As a professional photographer, I’m sometimes asked what I think about “school photos”. You know those companies that come into schools and take headshots of all the kids? Yeah, those.

Well, as a general rule, I find school photos to be awful. At least by my standards of photography & at least TRYING to get the kids to smile…. but that being said, I LOVE school photos. Why? Because they are HILARIOUS! At least, they are to me! My kids always do these weird awkward smiles that I never get, and it literally makes me laugh every single time I get one of those sheets home with their proofs on it.

My son’s photos from last year (JK) are my absolute favourite so far. I think I laughed for a good 30 minutes after I saw this.

I have never seen either of those smiles on my son in his whole life. Hilarious! (The second one reminds me of The Grinch’s smile. haha!)

So this year, with his SK Grad photos, I was hopeful for something awesome. I think this thumbs-up had me laughing the most.

Adorable and awkward, all at the same time!

Of course, the nicest smile he did was when he wasn’t wearing the graduation cap. What’s a graduation photo without the hat?! Luckily, doing what I do, I fixed it πŸ™‚

So yes, school photos are awful. But they’re also really, really funny.

I don’t like the term “retouching”. It suggests the photo has been “touched” before, and is now being “re” touched. I don’t know. Editing just seems like a better term, so that’s what I’m using πŸ˜‰

Today my kids and I were in the backyard, and one of our cats was out there too, and I took some random photos of various things while I was out there because it was a pretty nice day.

One of the photos I took was of the cat, while he was talking towards me. It came out pretty well (as cats tend not to “pose” so much πŸ˜‰ ) and then I thought, I haven’t shared a before/after comparison in awhile – or ever.

SOOC means “straight out of camera” – so no editing or colour correction or anything, just the straight image that the camera sees (and yes, I shoot in raw, which means there is no processing at all, not even by the camera – and since cameras likes to make everything gray and dull looking before processing, that’s how the SOOC images come out.)

Before/After Editing

The bottom image is after I edited it. Much better!

Shameless self-promotion time!

In addition to photography coverage, I do also photo editing services! At this time, I do not edit photos in mass quantities for other photographers. (ie. a wedding or some other large event). However, I do work for people who say, took a great picture of their kid but there’s an awful sunflare in the way, or they just want more contrast or brighter colours before they print the photo for their wall, things like that. Sometimes the editing isn’t as drastic as the above.

Photo editing example

My good friend Karyn (whom I’ve known since the first day of Kindergarten! πŸ˜€ ), took this photo of herself to show off her new hair colouring (which looks super awesome, by the way!). The original photo is pretty good, but I really wanted to make her hair colour “pop”, and also remove the distracting stuff in the background. This was just a quick edit, but small things can make a big difference in a photo.

Some of the photo editing services I offer are:

  • Full Edit (Custom colour toning & portrait enhancement (blemish removal, smooth skin, white teeth, etc.))
  • Digital Weight loss / slimming
  • Double chin removal
  • Digital make-Up
  • Background replacement
  • Photo composites (combining multiple photos, or adding people to a photo)

If you are interested in my photo editing services, feel free to send me your photo(s), and what you would like done do it, and I can send you a quote. Photo edits start at only $1!

I’ve recently done some more editing work (that would be, editing photos that I have not taken myself).

A lot of people don’t realize how much of a *huge* impact retouching can make on an image! In fact, if you’ve taken a fantastic picture, I guarantee I can make it even better! Contact me to find out more about my photo enhancing services!

So I’m out of town right now (I’ll be back home on Tuesday), and my son has decided to help me edit photos!

And yes I bring my good monitor and laptop and files with me when I’m out of town – otherwise I’d get so behind on getting my clients their pictures!
