Newmarket Wedding Photographer | Backyard Star Wars Wedding

Jillian & Beau

Star Wars has been getting a lot of press lately! The new movie “Rogue One” was recently released, and then today, actress Carrie Fisher died (known for her role as Princess Leia, of course.). Needless to say, everyone is talking about Star Wars these days! So, with Star Wars on the mind, I thought what better time to post about Jillian and Beau’s lovely, stormy, backyard Newmarket wedding!

How They Met

Beau’s sister, Tara, introduced Beau and Jillian. Jillian was friends with Tara, and she only knew Beau from a distance. They had a fun karaoke night, and Beau was smitten with Jillian. Tara had planned a night out of dancing, and they all went to a carnival before going to a bar. Beau made Jillian go on a spinny ride that she didn’t want to go on, and she ended up barfing everywhere – it was true love. Beau thought he blew his chances when Jillian got sick, but they spent the night joking around, and he let her know he was interested in her. Jillian’s first thought was “This is my best friend’s brother!”, but she knew he was special and she loved being with him. Beau’s first thought upon meeting Jill was “This girl is so cool!”.

They went on their first date to The Keg Steakhouse. They spent 3 hours at the restaurant talking and laughing, and they hit it off right away.

The Proposal

After 2 years of dating, Beau and Jill went on a trip to Mt. Tremblant. Beau took Jill up the mountain, and they were literally in the clouds when he popped the question!

The Wedding

It was a dull grey day when I woke up the morning of Jill and Beau’s wedding. The weather forecast didn’t look good. And most importantly, my pre-wedding sunshine dance didn’t help much (or so I THOUGHT!…). I got to Jill’s parents’ house, where the ceremony was to be held in the backyard, and also where everyone was getting ready. Shortly after I arrived, the thunder and lightning started, and the rain just poured. Good thing there were tents set up in the backyard for such weather! Everyone continued getting ready, and I remember vividly that as I was photographing the rings, the thunder was rumbling and the power flickered once or twice. Just after that, we heard that a tornado had touched down just 30 minutes away from us!

Before I go on, I will say that this was not a “Star Wars themed wedding” – every single one of the Star Wars elements were surprises for Beau, including some of the Star Wars-specific photos (like the Star Wars Lego figurines with the rings above.)

By far the most popular Star Wars element/surprise were Jillian’s shoes. She had them custom made, and even though she said they weren’t very comfortable, they looked fantastic and all the guests loved them!

Jillian and Beau’s daughter, Holly, was a most adorable flower girl. She had a very serious face for most of the day, observing everything that was going on, but I did get a few smiles out of her. (She certainly makes you work for those smiles!)

I got some super cute daddy/daughter pictures with Beau and Holly while Jillian was finishing up getting ready.

Jillian and Beau didn’t plan on doing a First Look, but at the last minute they changed their minds because then they wouldn’t have to hide from each other in the same house while getting ready. Makes sense to me!

The ceremony was held under the gazebo in Jillian’s parents’ backyard. There was an adjoining tent for the guests to be under as well.

Just after the ceremony, we were going to head out to do some bride & groom photos, and the skies cleared right up for us! It was a miracle! (Or perhaps the workings of a certain someone’s sunshine dance done earlier in the day ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

Once we got back to the house, Jillian and Beau greeted their guests, and got ready to start the reception. Jillian had left a gift on Beau’s chair at the head table, and he was very happy when he opened it! It was a rare Boba Fett helmet!

The photo below on the left was also going to be a surprise for Beau, but he totally caught on to what we were doing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I think I still surprised him with the photo below on the right though!

Congrats Jill & Beau!! I was so happy to be a part of your wedding day, and even the awful weather (which thankfully cleared up!) couldn’t dampen everyone’s happy spirits!

Tiffani and Jonathan’s Backyard Wedding in Mount Albert

Tiffani and Jonathan got married in Mount Albert (well, technically Zephyr) on the HOTTEST day of the year – it was 38*C – and it was an outdoor wedding! Oddly enough, you would never know how hot it was just by looking at the photos. Despite the heat, it was a fantastic wedding, with fantastic people, and everyone had lots of fun – especially the kids, since Tiffani made sure their wedding was super child-friendly by having a bouncy castle! (If it wasn’t so crazy hot, I bet I could have gotten Tiffani and Jonathan in the bouncy castle too ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

The day started in Mount Albert, with Jonathan’s “getting ready” photos, and a few quick portraits.

Then we all headed out to the same spot where we did Tiffani and Jonathan’s engagement photos, to do some family photos and photos of the groomsmen. While we were there, Jonathan’s friend Alex found not one, but TWO four leaf clovers! Double luck! Unlike Alex, who told me that he finds four leaf clovers all the time, I have never found a four leaf clover in my entire life, so I was very excited. As was Jonathan’s sister, Vivien (who is awesome, by the way.)

After that, I thoroughly enjoyed the air conditioned drive over to Tiffani’s parents’ house, where the backyard wedding was taking place. Tiffani’s father built this big structure, almost like the skeleton of a barn, in the backyard. It was covered with a big white tarp, which would have covered the guests if it rained, but it also provided shade on the hot day that it was! It was awesome and very impressive! After the wedding, they planned on dismantling it, and using the wood for other projects. The “barn tent” (I’m not really sure what to call it!) was a multi-purpose area which served as the ceremony area as well as the reception area! A really smart set-up, if I do say so myself! At the end of the “barn tent”, was a small stage, which was not only the “altar” during the ceremony, but also where the head table was setup for the reception, and then after dinner would turn into a dance floor. Brilliant!

The gorgeous (and delicious!) wedding cake and cupcakes!

Tiffani’s wedding gown was custom made by her friend’s mother – and it was stunning! The beading, the fabric, everything!

Tiffani walked down the aisle to a piano instrumental version of Christina Perri’s song “A Thousand Years”. (Side note: I LOVE this song!!! I know it was probably written for spouses/lovers, but it makes me think of my kids, especially my daughter.)

The awesome wedding party! They were all so much fun! And as it turns out, Marisa has a hidden talent for making little kids smile in photos, so she was super helpful ๐Ÿ˜‰ And the guys had me laughing all day! What a great group!

Of course we had to do the ever popular “running from a dinosaur” photo, because Jonathan is a HUGE Jurassic Park fan. If Tiffani had let him, he would have had a Jurassic Park themed wedding.

I took it one step further though, and put some dinosaurs in a few photos – just for you Jonathan!

The whole family got in on the action too! (I thought it was hilarious how a few of them were shoving each other out of the way.)

Tiffani and Jonathan have a very regal look. Very “William and Kate”, I think.

One of Tiffani’s friends lives in London, England, and she couldn’t make it to the wedding. Luckily, the technology available these days makes it possible to see your friends on your wedding day, even if they are halfway across the world.

Congrats Tiffani and Jonathan! You two are just so perfect together, and I’m so happy I got to be a part of your special wedding day!
